The youngest founder of a religious congregation in the history of the
Catholic Church began his life-long task while a seminarian in Mexico
during a time when seminaries were underground -- because they were
against the law. Marcial Maciel founded the Legionaries of Christ quite
literally underground in the basement of a store in Mexico City on January
3, 1941.
How did a 20-year-old from a backwater town in rural Mexico come to found
a religious congregation and a lay movement, Regnum Christi? How was he
influenced by the martyrs he saw dying for the Catholic Faith during the
Cristero War of the 1920s? How has this group born of a persecuted Church
grown to become one of the fastest growing religious congregations in the
Church?
In The Legion of Christ: A History, authors Angeles Conde and David J. P.
Murray document the people and events surrounding the creation of this
work of God. In a warm and readable style, they demonstrate that the
genesis and growth of the Legion of Christ and Regnum Christi can only be
attributed to the founder's perseverance greatly aided by Divine
Providence.
This Internet site offers a brief taste of the book's contents: its
Foreword, excerpts from three chapters and a Chronology of important dates
in the first sixty years of the Legion of Christ and Regnum Christi. It is
an inspiring story for all believers; it offers living proof of Christ's
promise to give his followers great blessings and persecutions as well.

I didn't ask you for it . . . nor did you consult me.
But that is how you wanted it . . .
And you created me because you wanted to. I didn't ask.
Nevertheless, you wanted it that way,
and that's why you had me born into a Christian family,
allowed me to come to know your Son
and take part in his life through baptism.
I didn't choose it; I didn't ask.
You didn't consult me. You decided.
And that has been your way of acting all through my life.
You chose the road for me without asking my point of view
. . .
